Classes 2011/12

ACTL 2011-2012 features three strands.

• In term 1 there will be an
  • Introduction to Phonology at an Advanced Level (Nevins and Bermúdez-Otero)

  This course will cover current topics in Phonology, the Phonology-Morphology Interface, the Phonology-Cognition interface such as Word Segmentation, Vowel Harmony, Artificial Grammar Methods, Vowel Fortition, Palatalization, Cyclicity, and Domains of Application. The readings are organized in a (large) zip file: here.

  • Semantics in Generative Grammar (Nilsen)

  The course uses two textbooks, which you will need to have access to:

  I. Heim and A. Kratzer. Semantics in generative grammar. Blackwell Publishers, Malden, MA., 1998.

  B. H. Partee, A. G. B. t. Meulen, and R. E. Wall. Mathematical methods in linguistics. Kluwer Academic, Dordrecht ; Boston, 1990.

  • Minimalist Syntax (Roberts, Biberauer, Adger)

 

• Term 2 will then proceed with more advanced courses in syntax, semantics (Katsos & Pouscoulous), and phonology organized around the broad topic of acquisition.

Times and locations

Classes are generally held on Fridays and take place at the Linguistics Department at UCL in Chandler House, room G15 or room 101. For details, please see the schedule below.

Teaching does not start until 11 am to give participants travelling from outside London adequate opportunity to arrive on time using off-peak tickets.

There are classes of a somewhat more introductury nature in term 1, where each one and a half hour lecture is complemented by a one-hour tutorial taught a week later. The classes in term 2 are more advanced and will be delivered seminar style, with opportunitities for open-ended discussion and questions.
